Brown PLME saw applicant volume rise from 2,530 (Class of 2024) to 3,827 (Class of 2026) — a 51% increase in 2 cycles — while class size stayed near 60–90 students, compressing acceptance rates to historic lows.
Northwestern HPME — historically among the most selective BS/MD programs at ~2–3% — is PERMANENTLY DISCONTINUED — not a temporary pause for the 2025–26 cycle. This is a major shift in the BS/MD landscape and funnels competitive applicants toward other elite programs.
Following the Supreme Court's 2023 SFFA ruling ending race-conscious admissions, Black matriculants to MD programs fell 23% (2,124 in 2021 → 1,627 in 2024) and Hispanic matriculants fell 14%. BS/MD programs are not exempt from these trends.
Brown University expanded its financial aid policy in 2025 to provide free tuition for undergraduate students (including PLME) from families earning $200,000 or less annually. For 2025–26, Brown's full cost of attendance is $93,164/yr UG and $108,070/yr for medical school.
MD matriculants averaged MCAT 512.1 in 2025 (AAMC FACTS 2025, published Dec 9 2025). For BS/MD programs that require MCAT scores during undergrad — Drexel (128/section ≈ 512), Penn State/Jefferson (508 min), VCU (508) — students must meet or exceed national matriculant averages mid-undergrad.
AAMC's November 2025 update to the official combined BS/MD program list (updated for 2025–2026) confirmed multiple programs. DePaul/Rosalind Franklin is a new addition for 2026. University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson runs a 7-year program that is new to the AAMC list.
While individual school acceptance rates remain ~4.23% on average, the percentage of MD applicants who eventually matriculate to any MD program rose to 44.58% in 2024 — due to new MD school openings increasing total seats. This does not affect highly selective BS/MD programs.
The 2024 entering class of MD programs performed an average of 717 hours of community service cumulatively — the highest on record per AAMC data. For BS/MD applicants competing even earlier, expectations for community involvement are only rising.
MedEdits (2025), InspiraAdvantage (2025), and PrepScholar all converge: top BS/MD admissions committees now prefer 2–4 activities with deep, multi-year commitment over 10–15 superficial entries. "Resume padding" is actively penalized — longevity matters more than volume.
